Captain Skip Dana Report - Broward - May 2, 2011

May 3, 2011
Fishing out of Hillsboro Inlet the past week has been spectacular. A very solid snapper bite along with the springtime kings with a few nice cobias mixed in has made for some great trips.

With the choppy weather we had last week the mutton bite was off the hook. Most of the fish were in the 4-6 pound range but every trip we got at least one over 10#’s. The best bite was anywhere north of the Blue Roof all the way up to Deerfield Pier inside the 2nd reeft from 40 feet all the way in to 18 feet. The yellowtail bite has been really good too but with the mutton bite as good as it was we stayed away from the tails.

This past weekend our fishing got a little more back to normal as far as where we were fishing. The shallow water bite slowed down so we got back to our normal 130 feet to the reef and the bite was really good, lot’s of yellow tails and a few nice muttons along with some FAT kings and a couple cobias. There were quite a few dolphin around too but most of them were under the 20 inch mark to make them legal so we didn’t spend too much time chasing them around.

I got a chance for the first time in a few weeks to get out on the "Pop a Top" to test the waters for the Saltwater Shootout this weekend. With a skeleton crew we headed out down off commercial and had quite a few king bites catching a 40 and several other nice fish along with a couple sailfish lot’s of bonitas and lot’s of cutoffs on the mono rigs we had out hoping for a tuna.

Fishing on the driftboats was great again today, lot’s of nice snappers and a few kings. The weather report looks very fishing for the rest of the week, so good luck if you can get out.
