The Competition Heats Up in the Keys!

February 27, 2014

A premier fishing location, a fierce competition between top teams and a celebrity fishing day for charity, are all things to expect at the 2014 Jimmy Johnson’s National Billfish Championship (JJNBC). This tournament is hosted at the Big Chill in Key Largo on March 5th through the 8th. The third leg in the Quest for the Crest Series, an estimated $500,000 purse and championship rings are up for the taking.

The 2014 season brings some changes. The host of the tournament, Jimmy Johnson, the famous Fox NFL sports analyst and renowned football coach, is throwing in a Hail Mary. This year, a Celebrity Pro/Am Charity Competition will take place on March 6th.  Up to twenty boats will fish together with Jimmy’s celebrity friends in an effort to raise money for the UM Sylvester Center and other tournament charities.

The UM Health/Sylvester Cancer Center provides cancer services and is the hub for cancer-related research, diagnosis and treatment. In 2013, the JJNBC was hosted in honor of a high school student, Billy Thies, Jr., who was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma. Billy has recently received an “All Clear” diagnosis and is now a contributor to the Billy Thies, Jr. Award, which will be given to a recipient each year during the closing reception of the tournament.

This tournament is also a turning point for the teams competing in the acclaimed Quest for the Crest Sailfish Series. As the third stop in the series, teams in contention for the series title and the Quest jacket must ‘show up’ in a big way at the JJNBC. For the complete list of series standings visit

The Kickoff for the JJNBC takes place on March 5th at the Bill Chill in Key Largo, located at MM 104.  Final Registration will take place between 4pm-7pm. Late registration fee is $4,815 per team (tax included). Competition Days are March 7th and 8th. Can’t make it down?
