March 11, 2014

Total # of Boats: 47                                                                Total # of Releases: 149

47 teams fished for a record setting purse of $543,250 in the 2014 Jimmy Johnson National Billfish Championship that was held March 7th and 8th in Key Largo. The tournament was filled with great parties, celebrity appearances from the likes of Michael Irvin, Desmond Howard and others, and a fiercely contested competition between top sailfishing teams vying for the massive purse and Jimmy’s championship rings.

Entered across the board, Liquid’s first place title brought them home a record-breaking check of $206,650.00!  With a total of 11 releases, each of those Sailfish was worth about $18,768! Liquid’s purse consisted of $47,000 for first place overall, $33,255 in Tier 1 Daily’s, $69,120 in Tier 2 Daily’s, $34,875 1st Place Leaders Board, $8,100 1st Place Self Centered, $1,000 for High Point Boat Under 40’ and $11,800 for winning the Mono A Mono! Team Liquid also earned championship rings from the football legend and tournament host, Jimmy Johnson. The rings are exclusive for the top team in the tournament.

Liquid’s first place title also helped win SeaVee boats the Boat Builders Throwdown trophy. With Liquid in 1st, team D&D grabbing 6th place and Team Sailsmen holding 8th place, SeaVee boats earned a total 79 points in the Boat Builders Throwdown.  Contender Boats followed in second with 64 points.

Liquid was not the only one to get a slice of that $543,000 pie. BAR South released 3 sailfish on Day 1 and 6 on Day 2 earning a second place title and a check for $82,995! Team Contender One followed in 3rd place with 8 releases. 4 Aces also got a slice of the pie, winning $41,370 for Early Bite Saturday, 3rd place Tier 1 Day 2 and 2nd place Tier 2 Day 2. The Master Angler of the tournament was Dylan Menten of Pisces V.  Dylan was technically a junior angler and had the opportunity to claim both Top Junior Angler and Master Angler status. However, in very classy style, Dylan insisted the Top Junior Award go to the next top junior, Timmy Maddock Jr. of Vitamin Sea Too. The Top Female Angler was Vandi Ladenthin of Annie. Top Senior went to Roger Ward of Just Do It.  The Non Pro Division went to a new boat to the Quest Series, Lumitec and Team Blue Moon won the Big Fish Bonanza with a 31.5lb Kingfish.

Team D&D managed to hook and catch a giant Yellowfin Tuna on Day 2 of the tournament although Tuna was not an eligible species.  The fish bottomed out a 100-pound digital scale and was estimated to weigh over 130 pounds!

There is one leg left in the Quest for the Crest Sailfish Series. With 3 legs in the books, Liquid has stepped into the first place position with 78 points. Doing it All/Team Hardway is currently in second with 73 points followed by Vitamin Sea Too with 63 points, 4 Aces with 60 points and Bar South and Lights Out with 58 points each. Although Liquid holds a commanding lead, it’s not over until it’s over!  All of these teams will have to show up in a big way at the ‘Grand Finale’ in order to determine who will take home the coveted burgundy jackets and claim the title of the best in the world. Final Sail will take place April 9-12th in Miami at the Double Tree Grand Hotel on Biscayne Bay. At the conclusion of the last leg, close to $2 million in prize money will have been handed out to the top teams in the Quest for the Crest Series.
