The first tournament in the 3 leg Pompano Beach Saltwater Circuit Series is the 13th Annual Mercury/SeaVee Pompano Beach Saltwater Shootout held out of Hillsboro Inlet on the weekend on May 7th.

Due to last year’s biggest attraction—the Kay Dee Dubya Jackpot, which won Team Rebound a total of $99,025 in the Saltwater Showdown—tournament organizers have added a new prize category for the Shootout titled ‘Pick 3.’ The Pick 3 is an optional entry category that is similar to the Kay Dee Dubya, but with a twist. This new category targets three species of fish, but which three you may ask? The answer to that question comes on the morning of the tournament. The names of 5 target species (Dolphin, Wahoo, Kingfish, Tuna and Cobia) will be placed in a sealed container on the morning of the tournament. The tournament committee will ‘Pick 3’ of the 5 eligible species from the sealed container. The three that are chosen will be the 3 target species in the Pick 3 for that day. Also like the KDW, if there is no winner, the purse will roll over into the next PBSC tournament where the process will start all over again.

The Shootout has earned a solid reputation for rewarding both quantity and quality in its prize categories. There is a team division which pays to 15 places, 1st place is worth $7,500, for the heaviest combined weight of the eligible species. Teams can weigh a maximum of 4 fish per species, no more than 10 fish total per boat. Or you can focus your efforts on catching one big fish. The Skin Deep team earned over $19,000 at the 2010 Shootout for catching the heaviest fish of the tournament—a 56.65-pound kingfish.

For those who are testing the waters in tournament fishing or just consider themselves average anglers, the Shootout has a division that caters to the “Average Joes.” Teams that have placed inside the top 8 of previous PBSC tournaments are not eligible, nor are teams with members who have earned part of all of their living charter fishing in South Florida within the past 10 years. The division pays 5 places with 1st place paying $2,000.

The Shootout’s affiliation with the Southern Kingfish Association (SKA) also brings some hype to the tournament. The Shootout continues to be a qualifying event for Division 10 of the SKA. Additional prize money is offered to SKA teams in the form of big fish—big kingfish to be exact. The heaviest four kingfish caught by SKA teams will qualify for an added cash bonus with 1st place taking home $2,500. An optional entry category is also available for SKA teams as well. Teams that are not currently SKA members can register online at or during the Shootout kickoff party on May 5th. However, SKA membership is not required to fish the Shootout tournament, only to be eligible for the bonus SKA prize divisions.

The Saltwater Shootout will have plenty to offer kids as well, with prize categories for Junior (Ages 10-15) and Pee Wee (Under 10 years) anglers. If you do not have a boat, but would love to introduce your kids to fishing, tournament organizers and the IGFA have combined their efforts to offer a FREE fishing clinic for kids between the ages of 5 and 12. The clinic will be held during the kickoff party on May 5th, from 6pm to 8pm and is limited to 30 kids. Each child who participates will receive a free rod & reel combo compliments of the Fish Florida Tag Agency. On Saturday, May 7th, the kids that participate in the clinic will be invited on a free fishing trip aboard the Helen S drift boat to put their new techniques into practice. Mom and Dad are welcome to join their children on the boat as well. Parents that would like to sign their children up for the clinic should call the tournament office at 954-725-4010.

Teams in the Shootout will also have their chance to win a brand new 29’ SeaVee boat valued at over $130,000! The kickoff party is Thursday, May 5th from 6pm-10pm at the Pompano Beach Civic Center-1801 NE 6th Street, Pompano Beach, 33060. Activities include live music, food, drinks, silent auction, raffles and more! All activities are open to the general public. Entry fee in the Saltwater Shootout is $375 per boat through April 27th and includes all anglers. After April 27th, the entry fee is $475 per boat. To register for the Shootout, log on to or call 954-725-4010
