Sailfish Challenge FAQ's

 

How much does it cost to enter the tournament?

  • Registration is $695 plus tax per boat up until February 14th, 2012. After Feb 14, entry fee is $895 plus tax per boat for everyone.

Do I have to pay extra to add additional anglers?

  • No. This is a boat tournament and we do not charge additional fees for additional anglers.

Can the captain also be an angler?

  • Yes. The captain does not need to fill out the angler portion of the entry form. Completion of the captain's section of the form will qualify him or her as an angler.

Where can I register for the tournament?

  • By mail: Checks may be mailed with your registration form up until February 14th, 2012.

    • Kickoff Party: Your last chance to register is the night of the kickoff party.

Can I pay with a check at the kickoff party?

  • No. Acceptable payment methods at the kickoff party are Cash, Mastercard, and Visa. No business or personal checks will be accepted at the kickoff party.

What are the eligible species of fish?

  • Sailfish, White Marlin, Blue Marlin, Dolphin, Wahoo and Kingfish

What is the minimum weight requirement for Funfish?

  • 10 pounds

How many Funfish can we weigh and where can we weigh them?

  • 1 per species. A maximum of 3 fish per boat (1 Dolphin, 1 Wahoo, 1 Kingfish). Weigh scales will be available at all 3 inlets: Hillsboro, Government Cut, and Lake Worth.

What if there is a tie?

  • In the event of a tie, winners will be determined by the team or individual that releases their last fish first.

Can we use treble hooks?

  • No. As required by NMFS, all teams must use a non-offset circle hook in the tournament.

Can we use J hooks?

  • J hooks are not permissible when using live baits in the tournament, however, J hooks may be used on artificial lures only.

Can we use plastic teasers and/or artificial dredges?

  • Yes.

How many lines can we fish?

  • All boats are permitted to fish up to eight lines based on their general entry fee into the Sailfish Challenge.

What method is used to verify Sailfish releases in the tournament?

  • All releases must be documented on video by each team as stated in the rules. Acceptable video formats are Mini DV tape, Mini DVD-R disc and SD cards. Teams must provide their own media.

Is live chumming allowed in the tournament?

  • No. Live Chumming is not permitted. Frozen chum, however, is allowed.

 

What are the boundaries in the tournament?

  • Boats are limited to the waters off of the east coast of Florida no more than 35 miles offshore. Boat may fish as far north and south as they wish.

Is there a Bimini Start?

  • No. Boats may checkout from their specified inlet at 6:30am and proceed to their fishing grounds.

Is there an official announcement of lines in the water?

  • Yes. The announcement will be made at 7:30am.

What inlets can I check out from?

  • Available inlets are:
    • Government Cut, Miami
    • Hillsboro Inlet, Pompano Beach
    • Lake Worth Inlet, Palm Beach

Do I have to turn my release card into the same inlet I checked out of?

  • No. You may turn your release cards into any one of the 3 inlets. Just make sure to be checked in by 5:30pm.

Is there an official announcement of lines out of the water?

  • No. Boats with release cards to turn in must do so by visually checking in at the specified location inside any one of the (3) tournament inlets by 5:30pm. Check-in locations will be identified at the Captain's meeting. Kingfish, Dolphin and Wahoo may be weighed at any of the check-in locations.  Boats that do not check in at one of the specified locations by 5:30pm will be ineligible to submit their release cards or weigh their fish.

Do I need to call in hook-ups?

  • No. Only releases that are documented by your video camera should be called in.
