Pop A Top Wins Saltwater Shootout! Off the Wall Nails Pick 3 and a $100,000 Payout!

May 10, 2016

POMPANO BEACH, FL – Multiple records were broken at the 18th Annual Mercury/SeaVee Pompano Beach Saltwater Shootout held on May 7th out of Hillsboro Inlet in Pompano Beach, FL.  A cavalry of 145 teams, the largest turnout for the Shootout in over 10 years, showed up to take a shot at what was expected to be a record setting purse.  And, record setting it was.  Just prior to the start of fishing, tournament director, Jamie Bunn, announced that the highly touted Pick 3 category had a staggering $98,280 up for grabs followed by $39,060 in the KDW Jackpot.  Shortly after the announcement the long awaited drawing took place and the target species for the Pick 3 were set – kingfish, dolphin and cobia.

The 7am start witnessed the majority of the field racing off in different directions in pursuit of the winning catch.  Except for Captain Skip Dana and his Pop A Top/Bonefish Mac’s fishing team.  They parked it right out front of Hillsboro Inlet the entire day and burned a total of about 10 gallons of gas.  They were covered up in a solid blackfin tuna bite all day and supplemented it with some quality kings.  When they arrived at the scale as the last boat to weigh-in, word on the water was that they had the winning bag.  It didn’t take long for those suspicions to be confirmed.  Four blackfin tuna and four kingfish hit the scales for a total of 185.3 pounds and the 1st Place victory in the Shootout.  The win was the first in the last 9 years for the Pop A Top team so there is no doubt that there were many ‘tops popped’ following fishing!  The 1st Place win earned the team a check for $19,345.

Pop A Top wasn’t the only team to create some noise during tournament day.  Just prior to the start of the weigh-in, there was a buzz spreading that two teams may have the KDW and Pick 3 species onboard.  Team Crescendo was the only team to weigh a wahoo in the tournament at 21.9 pounds.  Three weigher kings hit the scale to put Crescendo one step closer to the KDW Jackpot.  The final fish to hit the scale was their 14.6 pound dolphin.  High fives all around as the team realized they had just won the jackpot.  They finished 14th overall with the heaviest wahoo and the KDW Jackpot for a total of $40,160 in winnings!

Up until the 2016 Saltwater Shootout, the single largest PBSC category payout was handed out to team Rebound in the 2010 Showdown when they won the KDW Jackpot for $81,715.  With their combined winnings, the Rebound team took home a whopping $99,025 that year.  Fast-forward to 2016 and a Pick 3 purse that rolled over for three seasons and record that was bound to change.  And change it did when Captain John Anderson and his Off the Wall team stepped on the stage for the Shootout weigh-in.  With three kings, two dolphin and a cobia on the board Off the Wall had a solid catch at 106.1 pounds to secure the 6th Place position overall in the tournament.  More importantly, they hit the fishing lottery with their Pick 3 catch to claim a $99,680 payout - the single largest payout in the history of the Pompano Beach Saltwater Circuit!

Big fish are known to generate big payouts for teams in the PBSC series as well.  Team Wild Kat experienced that first hand at the 2016 Shootout.  They posted a 48.3 pound king that turned out to be the heaviest king and heaviest fish overall in the tournament.  That one fish was good for a $23,835 payout to the team.  Team Eastern Metal Supply/Kluch Clothing took the SKA Division 10 win with a 47.1 pound fish that contributed to a $14,763 payday for the team.

Kimbuktu took the 2nd Place spot with 127.4 pounds and a check for $11,376 followed by Preferred Marine in 3rd with 118.5, Going Reel Deep in 4th with 114 and Sailsmen in 5th with 110.4 pounds. Melanie Chojnacki from team High Gear was the Top Female Angler with 64.3 points and Brandon Rhodes from Pop A Top took the Top Male Angler title with 159.5 points.  Zachary Sullivanon Smile Maker was the Top Junior Angler with 49 points and Christopher Halbe on Double Diamond was the Top Pee-Wee Angler with 52 points.  The heaviest dolphin of the tournament, a 26 pounder, went to Wills Clementeof team Shaka/SkipJac.  Rich Cookof team Reel Control II landed the heaviest blackfin tuna at 33.4 pounds and Michael Tarasof Extractor Fishing Team landed the heaviest cobia at 31.7 pounds.

When all was said and done, a record setting $253,341 cash purse was dished out to the winning teams in the 2016 Saltwater Shootout!  The exciting 3-leg PBSC summer series continues June 9 - 12 with its second leg, the Mercury/SeaVee Pompano Beach Saltwater Slam.
