2011 Mercury/SeaVee Pompano Beach Saltwater Shootout
POMPANO BEACH, FL – Robbie Buckley’s Kimbuktu fishing team took home top team honors in the 2011 Mercury/SeaVee Pompano Beach Saltwater Shootout on May 7th as they weighed in 4 kingfish, 3 tunas and 2 cobias totaling 221.63 pounds, the team’s first victory in any of the Pompano Beach Saltwater Circuit tournaments. Robbie was joined by his son Ryan, Ariel Pared from SeaVee Boats, Joe Fernandez from JCon Construction, Eric Castillo and Joe Pusillo, who was also the top male angler in the tournament. The team’s victory came with a hefty paycheck of $16,520. Makin’ Time took 2nd place weighing 4 kingfish, a tuna and a dolphin to bring their total to 178.39 pounds. They also took home the Bluewater Challenge purse, boosting their total earnings to $26,653—not bad for a 2nd place finish! Controlled Slack, placed in 3rd with 168.4 pounds, Covered Up came in 4th place with 155.73 pounds, and Native Son took home 5th place with 151.88 pounds.
Mark Schongar’s FBC team weighed in a 49.9 pound kingfish that took home heaviest fish honors, beating out Makin’ Time’s 47.12 pound kingfish by less than 3 pounds. Ryan McBride’s Conched Out fishing team took home top Division 10 SKA honors at the tournament with their 40.25 pound kingfish.
It’s baaaack. The infamous KDW Jackpot has started again. No team managed to bring the trio of fish to the scales on Saturday, starting the roll over process once again and leaving the Jackpot at $5,670. It is expected to top $11,000 during the Pompano Beach Saltwater Slam on June 11th.
While no team caught the KDW trio, the same could not be said for the brand new Pick 3 rollover category which debuted in the 2011 Saltwater Shootout. On the morning of the tournament, 3 of the 5 eligible species were drawn from a sealed container. The species chosen were Kingfish, Cobia and Dolphin, not an easy catch by any standards. And it looked as if the Pick 3 purse would roll over into the Slam until the last boat, team SnakeDancer pulled up to the scales with a 23.93 pound Dolphin, a 19.66 pound Cobia and a weigher Kingfish. Their KDC combo totaled 60.4 pounds, earning them a $4,320 paycheck.
Several other teams earned nice paychecks in the Shootout because of the variety of categories offered. Team Double Down claimed the top Average Joe Team honors along with their 14th place finish earning a total of $4,443. Top Small Boat, Controlled Slack, took home $4,620 for their 3rd place finish, small boat and calcutta earnings. Total payouts for the 2011 Saltwater Shootout were $100,177.
