Reel Tension dominates Saltwater Showdown! Penny-Less wins Showdown Crown!

With a grin on their face and their rain jackets drenched, Team Reel Tension approached the weigh-in stage with a feeling that they had the 2013 Mercury SeaVee Pompano Beach Saltwater Showdown in the bag - the fish bag that is.  The Saltwater Showdown, which was the final leg in the Pompano Beach Saltwater Circuit, took place on August 3rd.  A total of 75 boats participated in this invite only tournament. A long day of storm dodging was motivated by a purse in excess of $110,000.

While kingfish are more prominent in the first two legs of the PBSC, wahoo typically make their celebrity appearance every year in the August Showdown.  The heaviest fish of the tournament was a 59.5-pound wahoo caught by Paul Neidorf on Boats Direct USA! That wasn’t the only heavy hitter.  Spiced Rum III landed a 50-pound wahoo and ProPayroll landed a wahoo just over 45-pounds.

Reel Tension, the first place team in the Showdown landed a 42.2-pound wahoo as well.  In addition, they weighed 4 Kings, a 23-pound dolphin and a 28-pound blackfin tuna - the heaviest tuna in the tournament. With a total weight of 175.8 lbs, team Reel Tension claimed the championship title and their first victory in the PBSC.  If being first place wasn’t enough, Reel Tension also won one of the largest calcutta’s in the PBSC, the KDW Jackpot. They weighed the heaviest king, dolphin, wahoo combination for a $17,640 payout in that jackpot alone.  The grand total for Reel Tension was over $26,000!

Boats Direct USA finished 2nd place overall, had the heaviest wahoo and the heaviest fish overall in the Showdown to earn over $24,000!  Their wahoo was also the heaviest fish caught during the season – a feat that earned them a 4 day/4 night trip to Bimini Big Game Club in the Bahamas.

Anne-Marie Sabanos of Dealers Choice won top Female Angler and Lamar Sapp of Liquid Skillstrom was the Top Senior Angler. Top Junior prize was claimed by Pierce Statham of Blue Moon and Corbin Buckley of Ric A Rue took the 1st Place Pee Wee division. Captain Kyle Scavone and his Double Down team won the Average Joe Division and the Average Joe Bonanza.  In addition, Dylan McDaniel of Worth the Wait won Junior Master Angler with 86 points. His name will be engraved on a perpetual trophy on display at the IGFA Hall of Fame Museum in Dania, FL.

The most anticipated award of the entire season was presented as the final award of the season – the Simrad sponsored Showdown Crown. The Crown is the most prestigious award in the Pompano Beach Saltwater Circuit.  It recognizes the most dominant team in all of competitive meat fishing.  For the first time ever, there was a tie for points between Penny-Less and Doing it All.  Both teams tallied 76 points.  The scoring system assigns a point score based on where teams place in each tournament.  Ties are broken based on total aggregate weight for the season.   In that calculation Penny-Less edged out Doing It All by just over 20 pounds with an aggregate weight of 456.67 pounds. of With a higher aggregate weight over the entire season, Team Penny-less became the 2013 Showdown Crown winners.  They receive an exclusive set of rings for their achievenment and join an elite group of competitors in the PBSC fishing hall of fame.

All in all, over $320,000 was handed out during the 3-leg PBSC Season.
