Sailfish Challenge Starts February 24th
Over the past few years, the Sailfish Challenge presented by Mercury Marine has produced some of the hottest sailfishing in South Florida. In the last four years, 295 teams combined to release 819 fish in the Challenge. In 2010, Captain Matty Tambor’s Owl’s Nest team was awarded top honors with 9 releases in the one-day tournament, earning a hefty $122,625 paycheck. Tournament participation grew more than 20 percent in the 2010 event and the tournament purse grew more than $50,000 from the previous year.
With its strong ties to the Associated Builders and Contractors organization, the Sailfish Challenge has become one of South Florida’s most esteemed sailfish tournaments. This year, organizers and fellow construction sponsors of the Sailfish Challenge established a new charitable foundation called Reconstructing Lives – a program geared towards providing construction aid to distressed families inside the construction community in South Florida. “Given our existing ties to the ABC and the construction industry, this program is perfectly suited for The Sailfish Challenge,” said Jamie Bunn. “We are excited about the impact we will be able to make in the lives of people who really need it over the long term.”

The boats competing in the 74th Annual Silver Sailfish Derby enjoyed exceptional fishing over the 3 day tournament. The competition remained tight in the Derby right up to the end of the tournament. The best fishing in the first half of the tournament was further to the north around Ft. Pierce. By the second day, the fish moved a bit further south with the best action occurring off Jupiter. Team Sandman, also had 18 shots fishing further south off Boynton Inlet on the second day of the tournament. Daryl Deka and his hard way team made a ‘hard’ charge on the third day of the tournament catching 15 out of 25 Sailfish to win the daily.
